Great opportunity to see ‘El sur‘ in 35mm. The second film by the renowned Spanish filmmaker Víctor Erice is a masterpiece!
Based on a short novel by Adelaida García Morales, in this coming-of-age story a young woman reflects on her childhood relationship with her father, attempting to understand the depths of his despair and the truth of his myths.
Erice once again shows the difficult growth of the protagonist from youth to adulthood framed in the historical context of the aftermath of the Spanish Civil War.
“The unfinished Spanish drama that’s perfect the way it is. Victor Erice’s 1983 gem remains a haunting tale of family secrets and postwar loss, even if problems behind the camera left much of its story unfilmed.”
“It’s a haunting, delicate portrait of childhood, with a father who oozes mystery (…).”
“A moving and mysterious study of childhood. (...) It’s a fragmented, lyrical work that has some extremely powerful moments of shadowy, painterly beauty.”
Festival & Awards winner: Nominated for Palme d’Or at Cannes Film Festival 1983, Gold Hugo – Best Movie at Chicago International Film Festival 1983
